Winter is here and that means your body has flipped it’s chemical switch to store fat in an effort to survive a long cold winter. But your not doomed to gained those pesky pounds if you’re willing to put in the work. Your may not be able to pound the pavement, as it is probably covered in ice and snow but here are 5 great ways to remain active and healthy throughout the winter season.
1. Have an outside play date
If you can take the cold, there’s a winter wonderland just outside your door to be explored and playing doesn’t feel like working out. So grab your special someone or your kids and head outside for a snowball fight! You’ll be surprised how sore you feel after ice skating, building a snowman or dotting your yard with several snow angels.
2. Make a workout out of your mundane tasks
Lace up your sneakers and turn on your pedometer! That weekly grocery store trip can easily turn into a calorie burning party. Plan to walk the perimeter of the grocery store twice before putting that first item into the cart. And make an effort to travel up each aisle, even though you might not need anything. Walk at a moderate pace but not too fast! We don’t want you running over any children.
3. Try a Winter Sport
Winter sports are a ton of fun and they torch the calories better than many of your traditional workouts. Break out the earmuffs and try some snowshoeing, a cardio workout your body won’t soon forget. Hit the slopes for some skiing or snowboarding. Even sledding is a workout when you have to trek back up the hill!
4. Put your DVD player to use
There are several amazing workout DVDs out there. Pick a few and get moving! Try something you’ve never done before, like Zumba! Get the Wii Fit system. If you’ve never watched Biggest Loser, allow me to introduce you to Jillian Michaels. She will whip your butt into shape from the comfort of your living room.
5. Make everything a competition
You do everything fast when you’re competing. Challenge your kids, friends or a loved one to a dual of who can bring the most grocery bags into the house the quickest. Challenge the kids to a house cleaning obstacle race. Get as creative as you need to. What’s the prize? A full body workout!
